The Ministry of Justice has launched an investigation after a prisoner reportedly gouged out his eyes while in his cell at HMP Nottingham.
East Midlands Ambulance Service was called to treat the unnamed man, who is in his 50s, for facial injuries.
A Prison Service spokesperson said the prisoner was taken to hospital after “an act of self harm”.
“Staff reacted quickly and paramedics attended. No other prisoners were involved,” the spokesperson said.
“The prison is investigating the incident and police were informed as a matter of course.”
The MoJ also confirmed there had been an incident of self harm, but refused to give further details.
The man was reportedly days away from being released.
Nottinghamshire Police were initially called in but decided no crime was involved.
